RTS: Pape Alé Niang Removes Alioune Badara Kane from His Editor-in-Chief Role

A decision signed by the RTS director general on October 12, 2026, ends Alioune Badara Kane’s role as editor-in-chief of international news while keeping him as a journalist at National Television. The document gives no reason and cites agreements from 2005 and 2014, but not the 2024 company agreement sought by unions. Kane calls the move an attempt to silence him and says he will continue defending his colleagues. Amid escalating labor tensions, the inter-union group announced a general strike from October 31 to November 2 that could disrupt coverage of the Dakar Youth Olympic Games.

The union alleges that armed men seized state operating officer Samson Abah and other employees, assaulted them near the River Benue Bridge, demanded money and forced them to restore power to the Government House. NUEE acting national secretary Dominic Igwebike said the dispute followed a disconnection at the Government House after an alleged meter bypass was discovered. The Benue State Government denies the claims, calling them defamatory and unfounded.
