133 Lamu Residents Take Dangote Refinery Land Dispute to Court Ahead of Groundbreaking

At least 133 residents of Lamu have taken their land dispute related to the Dangote refinery to Malindi High Court, seeking to halt activities until compensation and resettlement plans are addressed. They allege that bulldozers arrived in August 2024, destroying crops and property without notice, and that land has been allocated to the Ministry of Defence for works around Manda Bay. The refinery project, valued at 2.2 trillion KSh, is advancing with heavy machinery arriving for construction, and the community demands clarity from the government. The refinery is expected to process up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil daily, sourcing from Lokichar and other regions.
