A kingdom within a republic: Inside Uganda’s Buganda

Uganda gained independence from British colonial rule in 1962, but traditional kingdoms like Buganda continue to exist. Buganda is headed by a king, known as the Kabaka, and has its own traditional institutions, including the Great Lukiiko, which is regarded as its parliament. The kingdom covers about 61,000 square kilometers and is home to approximately 12 million people, with origins tracing back to the 13th century.
