2026 Ballon d’Or: After Missing Out, Mbappé Accused of Trying to Force His Win

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane won the 2026 Ballon d’Or ahead of Kylian Mbappé, who finished second, at the ceremony held on October 26 at the London Palladium. Kane scored 73 goals for club and country during the 2025-26 season, becoming the first Englishman to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001. Ballon d’Or 2026: Harry Kane’s triumph sparks major controversy

Harry Kane won the Ballon d’Or in London ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal, becoming the fifth English winner and the first since Michael Owen in 2001, at age 33. His season included a German league title, a Champions League semi-final, a World Cup semi-final with England and the Gerd Müller Trophy as top scorer. Critics in Spain challenged the result: Yamal’s uncle objected to Kane’s win, Spanish jury voter José Félix Díaz said he had expected Mbappé or Yamal to prevail, and Guti insinuated—without evidence—that holding the ceremony in London benefited Kane. In France, Samir Nasri also voiced skepticism on Canal+, though the provided text cuts off before detailing his view.

Malawian Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga finished tenth in the 2026 Women’s Ballon d’Or, won by Spain’s Alexia Putellas at a ceremony in London on Monday. She is the first African woman to reach the top 10, surpassing Zambia’s Barbra Banda, whose previous record was 12th in 2024; Banda ranked 18th this year. After finishing 17th in 2025, Chawinga recorded 15 goals and three assists in 22 matches during the period considered. Her achievement also draws attention to Malawi, a country long absent from major women’s football tournaments.
