2027 Elections Will Be More Than a Test, Says Former INEC Commissioner Mike Igini

Mike Igini, a former Resident Electoral Commissioner with Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says the 2027 general elections will be more than a test for Nigerian democracy. Speaking Tuesday on Arise Television’s Morning Show, he urged Nigeria to keep improving and deploying electoral technology when appropriate. Igini called on the media, civil society groups and Nigerians to monitor politicians before, during and after elections, and said election officials must act neutrally to maintain public confidence. He also raised concerns that courts increasingly decide elections that should be resolved at polling units.
