2027: Police warn politicians and supporters against destroying campaign posters

The Nigeria Police Force warned politicians, supporters and suspected thugs against destroying, defacing or unlawfully removing rival candidates’ posters, banners and billboards ahead of the 2027 general elections. It said such acts could amount to malicious damage, an offence addressed by Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law. Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu directed commissioners in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to prevent further incidents, investigate reports and prosecute those responsible. Political sponsors and others who encourage or support the destruction may also face accountability if their involvement is established.
