2027 Presidential Election in Burundi: Ndayishimiye to Seek a Second 7-Year Term

Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye has been nominated as the candidate of his party, the CNDD-FDD, for the 2027 presidential election. At 57 years old, Ndayishimiye will seek a second seven-year term after assuming the presidency in June 2020. The CNDD-FDD has maintained near-total control over the country's political life since 2005, with the opposition often silenced. Ndayishimiye has cultivated a more moderate image than his predecessor and was elected to the rotating presidency of the African Union in February 2026.
