2027: ‘There’ll be consequences’ — Amupitan warns against attacks on INEC officials

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Joash Amupitan, warned that anyone who threatens, intimidates or attacks electoral workers will be prosecuted, speaking at a meeting in Port Harcourt on October 31. He outlined the ICCES Tentacle security approach, which uses early warning and intelligence and involves about 60 security formations and commands across the South-South region. The region has 15,823,550 registered voters, including 3,736,434 in Rivers State, and INEC has completed nine of the 14 statutory activities on its 2027 timetable. Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, followed by governorship and State Assembly elections on February 6.

He noted that Kwankwaso was Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives before Obi entered national politics, and later served two terms as Kano State governor and as a federal minister. Ahmad contrasted that record with Obi’s former leadership of Anambra State.

He defended the administration’s measures, including the 2023 Electricity Act, which allows states to participate in the power sector, and a 4 trillion naira bond programme to settle verified debts. Alake said the programme’s first two phases raised more than 1.2 trillion naira, while the Presidential Metering Initiative provided meters to over 1.5 million customers. He also defended moving tariffs towards cost-reflective levels and said protections were in place for low-income households.
