26 Years of Resolution 1325: Women in Goma Demand Greater Recognition of Their Participation in Peace Processes

Women from associations and the humanitarian sector met in Goma, North Kivu, on November 3 to present initiatives promoting economic empowerment, women’s leadership and social cohesion, marking 26 years since the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325. Participants, including representatives of UN Women, MONUSCO and local organizations, said women remain insufficiently involved in peace processes. Sylvie Mazambi of Woman Power DRC called for a change in attitudes within local institutions; they also cited inadequate funding, women’s weak political representation, cultural barriers and insecurity as obstacles. Recommendations included a provincial network of young women leaders, a fund for women-led initiatives and systematic integration of gender considerations into local public policies.
