Following the death of 37 alleged illegal miners in custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, mining activities have resumed across several locations in Niger State. The deaths occurred on September 17 after operations on September 15 and 16, and are under investigation by an independent committee. Despite a suspension ordered by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago on September 18, miners keep returning to sites due to lack of alternative livelihoods.
