Deadly ‘racist’ attack in France: Are hate crimes rising in Europe?

A gunman killed Pengo Bassio Wangi and injured five people, including a 12-year-old girl who was seriously wounded, in shootings in Trappes and La Verrière near Paris. The suspect, 39-year-old Kevin T, was arrested after firing randomly for about 15 minutes at a petrol station, a medical centre and a children’s playground. Local MP Laurent Mazaury said the suspect told police he wanted to “kill foreigners”; President Emmanuel Macron called the attack terrorist and racist. The girl, of North African descent and wearing a headscarf, was shot eight times and taken to a children’s hospital for surgery.
