Kuils River street renamed in honour of community leader John Van de Rheede
Belhar Main Road in Highbury, Kuils River, has been renamed John Van de Rheede Drive in honour of the late educator and community leader. The City of Cape Town held a ceremony on October 17 attended by Van de Rheede’s family, Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews and members of the Highbury Foundation, which requested the change approved by the City Council. Van de Rheede taught at Bridgetown High School and Belhar High School and was a civic and political activist during apartheid. Over more than three decades, his work included teaching, small-business development and community initiatives, including a brick-making project in Kalkfontein.
