Benin: Claudy Siar says he will ask Canal+ to stop broadcasting French channel CNews

In a video posted on October 19, 2026, Claudy Siar said he would contact Canal+’s Benin management to request that French news channel CNews stop broadcasting in the country. Siar, an aide to President Romuald Wadagni for culture, media and Benin’s visibility, accused the channel of insulting and denigrating Africans and described its messaging as racist. He said Benin could not tolerate such a channel and noted that CNews had been condemned several times in France for discrimination and racial insults. Siar plans to meet with the president of Benin’s High Authority for Audiovisual and Communication on October 20.

Committee chairman Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere called for increased funding for pipeline surveillance, enforcement of domestic crude supply obligations and legislation to protect local refineries from disruptions. The committee also voiced confidence in a target of three million barrels of oil per day and said strategic reserves are planned to rise to 90 days in 2027.

Khalil, a permanent US resident and former Columbia University graduate student, was arrested at his student housing in March 2025. His case has become a flashpoint in debates over campus free speech and federal courts’ authority in cases involving noncitizens detained over their speech.
