Death of Clément Atangana: What does the law say about the presidency of the Constitutional Council?

Clément Atangana's death on October 4, 2026, in France at age 85 creates a vacancy at the head of Cameroon’s Constitutional Council. According to law n°2004/005, the President of the Republic must appoint a new president in case of vacancy, as there is no automatic succession. Atangana was also a member of the Council, freeing one of its eleven seats. The appointment of a new president and the filling of the vacant seat are responsibilities of the President of Cameroon.
