Hill-Lewis, McKenzie trade accusations over guns and gang violence in Cape Town

Democratic Alliance leader Geordin Hill-Lewis and Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie have clashed over illegal firearms, gang violence and Cape Town’s crime-fighting operations ahead of local government elections. Both campaigns had requested extended voting hours, the electoral authority said the vote was conducted normally, and about 34,000 people voted during the extension.

The Thursday, October 29 meeting was intended to resolve the dispute amid shootings allegedly linked to tensions between the associations; police confirmed that 10 people had been shot in recent days. Makhosandile Tumana, SANTACO’s Western Cape spokesperson, said talks had been rescheduled for Monday and CODETA members were expected to help protect drivers. He appealed to taxi operators to stop the killings, saying drivers and commuters were bearing the brunt of the dispute.
