72-hour strike: The substantial sums public-sector workers stand to lose

The three-day strike on October 21, 22 and 23 could lead to a deduction of about 10% of monthly pay, calculated at one-thirtieth of salary for each day not worked. The estimated loss ranges from around 7,000 CFA francs for a worker earning the minimum wage of about 70,000 CFA francs a month to 28,000–35,000 CFA francs for an average salary in Dakar. Deductions depend on actual participation and may rise when allowances are included. Education unions have previously denounced deductions of 100,000–200,000 CFA francs after multiple strike days were accumulated.

Bolawale cited operations around M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto and the arrest of a Chinese national with a valid mining licence, whose minerals were allegedly seized. He said his office was not notified of the operations and that seized minerals were not accounted for to the proper authorities.
