Enugu Corps Member’s Death Not Caused by Substandard Medicines, NAFDAC Says

NAFDAC denied that the death of a NYSC member at the Awgu orientation camp in Enugu State was caused by substandard or falsified medicines. Preliminary findings indicate he was treated on October 7 for symptoms of severe malaria and a peptic ulcer, discharged the next morning, and returned on October 10 before being referred to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, where he died after slipping into a coma. Doctors provisionally believe acute kidney injury caused by severe dehydration and shock may have led to his death; NAFDAC has collected medication samples for laboratory analysis.
