99 drowned in June as heatwave stifles Germany

Ninety-nine people drowned in Germany in June 2026, the most since the 2003 heatwave. The German Lifeguard Federation (DLRG) reported that most victims were young men, with 40 under 30. Drownings occurred mainly in lakes and rivers. DLRG president Ute Vogt cited excessive risk-taking and alcohol as contributing factors.
