Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to South African Lawyer Navanethem Pillay

Navanethem Pillay, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and judge at the International Court of Justice, received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. Born in South Africa and aged 85, she was honored for her efforts towards peace and international law, notably her anti-apartheid activism and her work as a lawyer for activists like Nelson Mandela. She also presided over the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda from 1999 to 2002 and was among the first judges at the International Criminal Court. From 2008 to 2014, she led the UN Human Rights Office and now serves as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice.
