Niger: EU questions Algeria over troop deployment

On October 30, 2026, EU foreign affairs spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said Brussels was closely monitoring Algeria’s deployment of soldiers to Niger and sought clarification about the mission’s scope, purpose and legal basis. Algeria’s parliament unanimously approved the deployment of units from the People’s National Army on October 25; Algiers says it is intended to protect shared energy interests. The EU supports efforts to promote security in the Sahel provided they respect international law, state sovereignty and civilian protection, and are transparent and proportionate. It is Algeria’s first overseas military deployment since 1973; President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said in early October, “We will protect Niger whatever happens.”

Jacques Attali explains why the next president will be unable to keep his promises

Jacques Attali says no candidate in France’s next presidential election will be able to carry out their entire program. He points to two major obstacles: the country’s strained public finances and legal constraints arising from the Constitution, European law and France’s international commitments. Attali says the incoming president could order an assessment of the public finances and use its findings to justify dropping campaign pledges. France’s debt could also require additional spending cuts or tax increases, forcing the next leader to revise priorities.

Jubilee Moves to Stop UDA from Using ‘Mbele Pamoja’ in Ruto’s New Slogan

Jubilee Party has asked the Registrar of Political Parties to stop UDA from using “Mbele Pamoja,” saying the phrase is registered as its official slogan. In a complaint dated November 5 and signed by Secretary General Moitalel Ole Kenta, Jubilee seeks confirmation of its registration and an interim notice barring UDA from using the phrase. The party says sharing the slogan could confuse the public and dilute its political identity. William Ruto adopted “Usawa ni Sawa - Mbele Pamoja” (“Equality is Fair, Forward Together”) as he shapes his messaging ahead of the 2027 general election.
