Niger military government reshuffles army command weeks after deadly mutiny

Niger's military government has appointed a new chief of the armed forces, General Mamane Sani Kiaou, replacing General Moussa Salaou Barmou following a failed mutiny in late August. General Abdourahmane Abou Zataka has been promoted to army chief of staff. The mutiny, which lasted almost 24 hours, involved fighting at the presidential palace and Niamey's international airport, resulting in the death or arrest of dozens of mutineers and presidential guard members.
