German police detain suspect after fire engulfs Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest

A fire engulfed the Kehlsteinhaus, known as the Eagle’s Nest, Adolf Hitler’s former mountain retreat in Bavaria. A smoke detector triggered the alarm at about 9:50pm on Friday, and around 200 firefighters responded; no injuries were reported. Police detained a suspect, identified by Bild as a motorcyclist travelling towards the scene, and are investigating whether he was connected to the blaze; its cause has not been announced. German media reported that investigators suspect arson, while the site’s remote location more than 1,800 metres above sea level complicated firefighting efforts.

Niger Miners’ Deaths: Commissioner Accuses NSCDC of Operating Outside Its Legal Mandate

Niger State Homeland Security Commissioner Maurice Bello Magaji told a judicial inquiry that survivor accounts pointed to unprofessional conduct by NSCDC operatives investigating the deaths in custody of 37 suspected illegal miners. Magaji said the then-suspended state commandant, Siayaka Zubeiru Aniriviye, notified him of the deaths on September 17, 2026, and that Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago directed that the bodies be taken to a hospital. The inquiry is also examining the arrest of 69 miners and the death of Emmanuel Emeka after six days in detention, including questions about the legality of his arrest and money allegedly connected to the case.
