Niger: First Fuel Convoy Arrives in Agadez Under Military Escort

A convoy of 53 tanker trucks carrying petrol and diesel from Algeria has arrived in Agadez, northern Niger, under escort by the Algerian army. The delivery fulfils an order from Niger’s national petroleum products company, SONIDEP, as the country faces fuel shortages; Niamey thanked Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The operation comes as Algeria has moved forward with deploying ground troops to Niger, a measure approved by both chambers of the Algerian Parliament on October 25. Stationing soldiers in northern Niger marks a shift in Algeria’s military doctrine, which had previously ruled out military intervention beyond its borders.
