Ghanaian Twin Brothers Face 20 Years in Prison Over $9 Million Romance Scam

Ghanaian twin brothers Jamal and Kamal Abubakari, both 22, and 53-year-old American Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie pleaded guilty in October 2026 to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. From July 2024 to April 2026, they allegedly used fake identities on dating platforms and social media to persuade victims to send money, defrauding people of more than $9 million across 25 U.S. states, Germany and Austria. The defendants agreed to forfeit jewellery and luxury items seized during their arrests. Each faces up to 20 years in prison; the twins are scheduled for sentencing on February 9, 2027, and Opoku-Boachie on February 10.
