Togo: Over 3,000 Beneficiaries of Short Courses as Certification Scheme Takes Shape

Togo is preparing a national scheme to certify short-duration training courses, launched in 2021 and attended by more than 3,000 people; the Education Ministry says over 80% reportedly found work. A workshop opened in Lomé on October 29, 2026, chaired by Education Minister Mama Omorou, to secure institutional validation of five certification and assessment tools. Supported by organizations including GIZ, the OIF and FNAFPP, the reform aims to harmonize training and help employers recognize participants’ skills. In May 2026, the government approved a strategic framework for the courses through 2035; the initiative comes as 46% of Togolese aged 18 to 35 surveyed by Afrobarometer said they were unemployed and seeking work.

Truck drivers denounce harassment on National Road 1 in Lubudi

Truck drivers travelling between Nguba village and Lubudi town in Lualaba province denounce what they consider abusive payments at three checkpoints on National Road 1. They say agents from public services, including the DGM, ANR, the armed forces, traffic police and road-safety commission, demand up to 25,000 Congolese francs per truck to let vehicles pass. Drivers also report fines of 120,000 to 200,000 francs imposed by the Lubudi secondary prosecutor’s office when passengers travel in freight trucks. The Lubudi territorial administrator says the barriers serve security purposes but acknowledges abuses and plans to convene the local security committee to review the complaints and take action.
