Lualaba: Chinese, Lebanese, Syrians and Moroccans among dozens of foreigners detained at a mine

A control operation at the Menda quarry in the Boss Mining concession in Kakanda, Lualaba, led to the detention of about 60 people. Those detained include Chinese, Lebanese, Syrian, Moroccan, Iraqi and Palestinian nationals, several of whom reportedly lacked the required documents to live and work in the DRC; Congolese civilians and military personnel were also apprehended. The interagency commission seized equipment and large amounts of cash in US dollars and Congolese francs, whose exact value and origin have yet to be established. Led by Papy Mbuyi of the Directorate General of Migration, the mission aims to combat illegal mining and determine the detainees’ responsibilities.

Flávio Bolsonaro calls himself 'leader of Brazil' after election loss

After losing Brazil’s presidential run-off to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Flávio Bolsonaro published a letter from the United States describing himself as Brazil’s “leader” and alleging, without evidence, that the election was fraudulent. He has not conceded, despite Lula’s 4.4-million-vote margin, and says he will lead the opposition from the US. Bolsonaro left Brazil after failing to surrender his passports as ordered by the Supreme Court in a money-laundering investigation; he has not been charged and denies wrongdoing. Both campaigns had requested extended voting hours, the electoral authority said the vote was conducted normally, and about 34,000 people voted during the extension.

SANTACO calls for end to Western Cape taxi violence after CATA skips talks

SANTACO has called for an end to deadly taxi violence in the Western Cape and urged drivers to return to work after CATA representatives failed to attend talks with CODETA and the provincial government. The Thursday, October 29 meeting was intended to resolve the dispute amid shootings allegedly linked to tensions between the associations; police confirmed that 10 people had been shot in recent days. Makhosandile Tumana, SANTACO’s Western Cape spokesperson, said talks had been rescheduled for Monday and CODETA members were expected to help protect drivers. He appealed to taxi operators to stop the killings, saying drivers and commuters were bearing the brunt of the dispute.

High Court Rejects Ruto’s Plan to Reserve Affordable Houses for Teachers and Police

Kenya’s High Court declared unconstitutional and legally ineffective President William Ruto’s announcements to reserve 20% of affordable housing units for teachers and police officers. In a ruling delivered on October 29, Justice Patricia Nyaundi said the president could not change allocation criteria established by law and regulations without a statutory or policy basis. The decision followed a constitutional petition arguing that the reservation would unfairly favour selected groups, despite the programme drawing on public resources and contributions from Kenyans in different occupations. Petitioners’ lawyer John Maina said the proposed allocation was unsupported by any existing law.
