Tinubu sought approval for $20.52 billion and €1.045 billion, as Nigeria’s public debt stood at ₦166.79 trillion in June 2026. Agada criticized the timing and proposed that, if lawmakers approve the borrowing, disbursements be barred from January through May 2027. He also proposed public-sector savings, including cutting governance costs by 40 per cent and merging agencies he considers duplicative.
