Tanganyika: Kalemie and Manono traders welcome toll reduction and Governor Kitungwa’s involvement

A toll reduction on the roughly 430-kilometre Manono-Kalemie road has lowered the fee for category C6 heavy trucks from more than $1,200 to $200–$250 per trip, under a ministerial order dated June 12, 2026. Traders and transporters in Tanganyika say the change cuts costs, eases market supplies and could revive trade. A charcoal seller says she can now travel to Kalemie twice a week, while a driver reports making four trips this month, compared with two previously. Local economic actors also praised Governor Christian Kitungwa’s involvement and urged authorities to preserve the measure.
