At least 78 FRN/M23 fighters were neutralized in October 2026 in the territories of Lubero, Masisi, Walikale and Kalehe, in North and South Kivu. Major Dieudonné Kasereka, communications officer for the 34th military region, said 58 fighters surrendered to the FARDC and Wazalendo groups, while 20 others were captured in military operations. Some defectors said they had been forcibly recruited in Goma, Bukavu and other towns, then sent to the front after only cursory training. The 58 who surrendered are being cared for pending decisions by the military hierarchy.

Vladimir Putin said Togo-Russia trade reached $852 million in 2025, about 480 billion CFA francs, during a meeting with Faure Gnassingbé in Moscow on October 30, 2026. The figure is more than eight times the $103.7 million recorded in 2024 according to the OEC, but neither the breakdown of trade nor the reasons for the increase were specified. The countries plan to expand cooperation in energy, transport, logistics, agriculture and geological prospecting, after signing seven memorandums of understanding since November 2025. Closer ties also include a bilateral agreement that took effect in September 2026 and the resumption of activities at Russia’s embassy in Lomé in August.
