Two storms slam northern Europe, cutting power to 150,000 homes

Storms Boelo and Austen swept across northern Europe within 24 hours, killing one person and leaving more than 150,000 homes in the United Kingdom, France and Germany without power. In Scotland, a falling tree killed a 60-year-old man and injured two women; winds reaching 135 km/h also blocked roads and rail lines. Nearly 59,000 homes in France remained without electricity on Sunday, while a blackout in Freiburg-Breisgau, Germany, disrupted mobile phone service and forced the main hospital to limit care to emergencies. Authorities warned of flood risks and urged people to stay indoors because of flying debris and crashing waves.

The Climate Impact Lab estimates that heat could cause 31,400 additional deaths between September 2026 and February 2027; this is a model-based projection, not a confirmed death toll. Authorities are urged to strengthen heat warnings and health preparedness, while residents are advised to stay hydrated, seek shade and check on vulnerable people.
