Scandal at Kocc School: How the Case of Elderly Déthié Dieng Shocked the Court

Déthié Dieng, a security guard in his sixties at the private Kocc School in Mbour, is standing trial before the criminal court over alleged sexual touching of an 11-year-old pupil. The girl’s mother reportedly became concerned after her daughter complained of pain while bathing; the child later accused the guard, and a medical examination found injuries to her intimate areas. Dieng denies the allegations, while school director Bassirou Ndiaye testified that the guard was well liked by pupils and that he had never heard of similar incidents; the defense also challenged the medical certificate’s evidentiary value. The court has reserved its decision until next month.

SEHRB and Intersociety allege killings and torture in South-East

A coalition comprising SEHRB, the Oganihu Igbo Development Foundation and Intersociety called for an independent investigation into alleged killings, torture, enforced disappearances and deaths in custody linked to security operations in south-east Nigeria. It said detainees had been transferred outside the region, including to Wawa Barracks, and urged an inquiry into unidentified bodies in mortuaries in Imo State. The coalition highlighted Calista Ifedi, who allegedly died in custody after being arrested with her husband in 2021 and was reportedly buried in a shallow grave at Wawa; it called for custody and medical records to be disclosed and her burial site identified. It also cited the reported detention of Ozioma Elizabeth Onyeaka for more than five years and the arrest of Esther Okwudili Egbom during a night prayer programme in Aba in February 2025.
