12 inmates escape from Kangbayi Central Prison in Beni

A spectacular escape occurred on the night of October 10, 2026, at Kangbayi Central Prison in Beni, North Kivu. Twelve inmates, including four Ugandans convicted of a bank robbery and eight Congolese, escaped by using saw blades and metal objects to cut security devices, then making a rope from sheets to climb over the wall. Authorities have launched an investigation to establish responsibility, and one of the escapees was caught by local youths and handed over to security forces.
