Togo: the law limits the dowry to 10,000 FCFA

Togolese law sets the dowry amount at a maximum of 10,000 FCFA, according to Article 56 of Law No. 2012-014 of July 6, 2012. This provision emphasizes the symbolic nature of the dowry, which can be paid in kind or in cash. The reform adopted in November 2022 did not change this cap, thus keeping the dowry within a symbolic rather than financial framework. The dowry must be given to the parents of the future bride or to the person in authority over her.
