Algeria revives death penalties by execution

Algeria is set to reintroduce the death penalty after more than three decades without executions in response to devastating wildfires. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune instructed amendments to the Penal Code to include the death penalty for those intentionally starting fires. Amnesty International has expressed opposition, calling for a moratorium on executions and a human-rights centered response to the wildfire tragedy.
