United States: California Officially Recognizes Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha

California passed law AB 2017 signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on September 27, 2026, officially recognizing Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha in the state’s calendar. The law allows schools and affected workers to observe these Muslim holidays without automatically granting paid days off. California is the second U.S. state to officially recognize these festivals, after Washington in 2025. This move represents a step forward in the institutional recognition of major Muslim religious celebrations in the United States.
