Syria says it foiled Hezbollah plot to target Homs oil refinery

Syrian security forces say they foiled a plot to attack the Homs oil refinery and arrested two people identified as members of a cell affiliated with Hezbollah. The General Intelligence Service said the operation, conducted with the Internal Security Forces, led to the seizure of explosive devices prepared for the plot. Hezbollah denied the accusations, saying it has no presence in Syria and is not involved in activities that threaten the country’s security. Syrian authorities also reported arresting two suspected ISIL members in Deir Az Zor province, who are accused of a series of assassinations, including the killing of Ibrahim al-Jassem.

DRC: MONUSCO meets leaders of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation

MONUSCO chief James Swan met former Democratic Republic of the Congo president Joseph Kabila at his residence in Goma on Tuesday. Kabila leads the newly formed Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), a political and military coalition that includes former members of the Congo River Alliance, among them the M23, which controls large areas in eastern Congo. After the meeting, FRN vice-president Bertrand Bisimwa called MONUSCO’s 28-year record a total failure and said he would have preferred the mission’s mandate not to be renewed so its planned withdrawal could continue. Kabila was sentenced to death in absentia by a Congolese court last year for treason and war crimes.

Yemen government accuses IRGC and Hezbollah of sending 21 experts to support Houthis

Yemen’s Interior Minister, Major-General Ibrahim Haidan, says 14 experts from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and seven from Hezbollah are helping the Houthis plan and direct military operations. His statement places them across six locations, including Hodeidah, Sanaa and Saada, and says their specialties include missiles, drones, electronic warfare and naval operations. Haidan warned that their activities threaten shipping in the Bab al-Mandeb strait and the Red Sea, and urged the international community to designate the Houthis a terrorist organisation and enforce the UN arms embargo. Fighting has resumed in five provinces after the Houthis seized Yemen’s western Red Sea coast and the Bab al-Mandeb area in September.
