The U.S. Department of Homeland Security defended an ICE shooting in New York City involving a man identified as Oscar Belgal, who was present with his five-year-old child. Homeland Security officials stated that Belgal refused to exit his vehicle and accelerated, hitting two ICE vehicles, prompting officers to open fire and graze his neck. Belgal, an undocumented migrant from the Dominican Republic with a prior five-year sentence for grand larceny, was taken to hospital and then transferred to a detention facility. DHS officials claimed they did not know the child was inside the vehicle during the shooting.
