Insecurity: Defence Minister proposes technology-driven tollgates on major highways

Nigeria’s Defence Minister, retired General Christopher Musa, has proposed restoring automated tollgates on major highways to record vehicle registration numbers, track traffic and help identify suspects. Speaking at a round table in Abuja, he also advocated linking national identification numbers with biometric records and facial recognition. Musa said the military should gradually withdraw from domestic security operations as police recruitment, training and capabilities improve, and raised concerns about soldiers’ prolonged deployments away from their families. He also identified national disunity as a major obstacle to tackling insecurity.
