Qatar: Rafale jets escort Emmanuel Macron on arrival in Doha

Qatari Air Force Rafale jets escorted Emmanuel Macron’s plane on its arrival in Doha on October 20, 2026, as part of the state honors for his two-day visit. The French president was welcomed by Defense Minister Saoud ben Abdulrahman Al Thani and then received by Emir Tamim ben Hamad Al Thani at Lusail Palace. The following day, Macron urged “extreme caution” over Gulf security tensions, while the emir described their talks as “fruitful.” Qatar bought 24 Rafale jets in 2015 for €6.3 billion and ordered 12 more in 2017 for €1.1 billion, with an option for 36 additional aircraft.

Iran has survived two rounds of attacks and retains the ability to retaliate against Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.

Germany arrests Ukrainian man accused of spying for Russia

German authorities arrested Vadym Y, a Ukrainian national, in Brandenburg, about 85km west of Berlin, on suspicion of spying for Russia. Federal prosecutors said he had been in contact with Russian intelligence through an intermediary since at least July 2025 and had gathered information on the production of armoured vehicles, ammunition and explosives, as well as military personnel and sites protecting NATO’s eastern flank. Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he was “not surprised” by the news. The arrest comes as Germany raised its threat level for Russian sabotage to “significant,” following discoveries of explosives-laden drones near military facilities and Leipzig/Halle Airport.
