Ruto Names Four Towns Set for Railway Stations on Kenya-Tanzania SGR Line

President William Ruto announced plans to build new railway stations in Mwatate, Bura, Mwakitau, and Taveta as part of an extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Voi to Tanzania. The project is already progressing to Mwakitau, with stations planned in Mwatate, Bura, and Mwakitau to facilitate transportation of goods and people. The government has allocated about Ksh5 billion for the extension, which will pass through Voi, Mwatate, Bura, Mwakitau, and Taveta before crossing into Tanzania. Additionally, the government is rehabilitating the Voi-Taveta metre gauge railway, a project launched in April 2026 to restore a key transport corridor between Kenya and northern Tanzania.
