‘A 10-minute phone call every three months is not enough’: Nnamdi Kanu’s family urges British government to act

Nnamdi Kanu’s family, speaking through Prince Emmanuel Kanu, accused the UK of failing to provide adequate consular protection to the IPOB leader, who is serving a life sentence in Nigeria. The family says British officials make only calls of about 10 minutes every three to four months, while Kanu’s appeal, filed in June 2026, has not been listed or heard by the Court of Appeal and the Nigerian government has reportedly filed no response brief. It asked whether the case had been referred to Alistair Burt, appointed in July 2026 as the UK’s envoy for complex consular detentions, and demanded an explanation if it had not. IPOB has threatened to boycott the 2027 elections in southeastern Nigeria if the appeal is not heard.
