Despite the legalization of voluntary abortion (IVG) in Benin in 2021 and the issuance of a decree in 2023 to regulate its implementation, access remains hindered by social, cultural, and religious resistance. Society often condemns abortion due to religious and traditional beliefs, even when women face difficult situations such as rape or poverty. Women continue to seek unsafe abortions because of lack of support and barriers to contraception access. Research from Cerrhud indicates that these resistances prevent effective securing of the practice.
