Abubakar tried to secure release of MKO Abiola before his death — Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo revealed that former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar was facilitating the release of Moshood Abiola, winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, before his death. Obasanjo spoke at the presentation of three books honoring Abubakar's 84th birthday. He highlighted Abubakar's role in managing the confusion after General Sani Abacha's death, including releasing political prisoners and working towards Abiola's release. Kola, Abiola's son, was already in Abuja to pick up his father when the unexpected death occurred.
