Govt Invites Public to Name Kenya’s Crude Oil Ahead of Global Market Entry

Kenya’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has invited the public to propose an official name for the country’s crude oil, which is expected to enter international trade after commercial production begins on December 1. Submissions must include the proposed name, an explanation of its meaning and suitability, and the submitter’s contact details, and are due by 5pm on October 29. President William Ruto said Kenya is targeting crude oil exports from Turkana in December 2026, following years of exploration and pilot production in the South Lokichar Basin. The selected name should reflect national identity, promote patriotism, and be easy to pronounce and remember across languages.

Investigators are seeking to establish whether criminal acts were committed; the Financial Crime Unit has begun gathering evidence and expects the inquiry to last several months. Abramovich denies evading tax or concealing his fortune, while Deloitte Cyprus says it acts in compliance with applicable laws.
