Aden Duale Says Kenya Could Be Declared Ebola-Free in 21 Days if No New Cases Emerge

Kenyan Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the country could be declared Ebola-free in 21 days if no new cases are detected. As of October 26, 21 days after the outbreak began on October 2, all reported cases were linked to the first imported case, with no community transmission reported. The WHO requires 42 consecutive days without a new confirmed or probable case before a country can be declared Ebola-free; the ministry said more than 551 suspected cases tested in the previous 48 hours were negative. Nearly 20 people quarantined after contact with the first case could be released on Monday after completing their 21-day quarantine, if they test negative.
