Africa Ebola outbreak passes 10,000 cases, mostly in DR Congo

The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak has surpassed 10,000 confirmed cases, including 10,060 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where 4,887 people have died since the virus was detected in May. Cases have also been reported in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda, and the WHO says containing an outbreak spanning eastern, western and central Africa is a complex task. Kenya has recorded nine cases and two deaths, while Nigeria’s only confirmed case is a Swiss woman evacuated to a hospital in Geneva. The lack of an approved vaccine or treatment for this Ebola species and distrust among some communities are hampering the response.
