Africa grows more tobacco, spends more on imported cigarettes — WHO

Tobacco production in Africa increased by nearly nine percent between 2012 and 2024, while global production fell by nearly 19 percent. Africa's cigarette import bill more than doubled, rising from $833 million to $1.77 billion. African countries are producing more raw tobacco for export while spending more on imported cigarettes, raising concerns about health, trade, and environmental issues.
