The rapid spread of the Bundibugyo virus, a rare Ebola strain, in Central and East Africa now constitutes the third-largest Ebola outbreak on record. Over a thousand confirmed cases and hundreds of deaths have been reported, mostly in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with additional cases in Uganda and France. The WHO declared a public health emergency of international concern in May, and a $518 million joint response plan was launched in June by WHO and the Africa CDC.
