African leaders called for more local processing of minerals, faster implementation of mining policies and investment in the Lobito Corridor. They said these steps could create jobs and help Africa benefit more from its mineral resources. The call came during a plenary session at the Zambia Mining and Investment Insaka in Lusaka, where Zambia’s Acting Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Gilbert Siame, spoke.

NBTI announces $600m pipeline for Nigerian innovation

The National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI) announced a financing pipeline exceeding $600 million after 298 Nigerian innovators took part in the NextGen Innovation Challenge 2026 in London. The proposed package includes $500 million for solar programmes at universities and polytechnics and $100 million for the Tinubu Light Initiative, though the funds have not been confirmed as received or fully mobilised. Tinubu Light aims to deliver solar solutions to one million micro and small businesses, create 50,000 direct youth jobs and train 10,000 field marketers. Food security: Togo prepares to implement the Kampala Declaration on agriculture

A high-level African Union Commission mission is in Lomé through October 22, 2026, to turn the Kampala Declaration’s commitments into national actions under the 2026–2031 CAADP framework. Talks between Togolese officials and AU representatives focus on agricultural productivity, food security, climate resilience and sustainable management of natural resources. The government plans to draw on ProMAT, whose cumulative support from the West African Development Bank reached 60 billion CFA francs after an additional 40 billion was approved in June 2026. Adopted in January 2025, the Kampala Declaration targets a 45% increase in Africa’s agrifood production, a tripling of intra-African agricultural trade and a halving of post-harvest losses by 2035.
