After the ban on Russian gas, Algeria and Morocco compete to supply Europe

On June 4, 2026, the energy ministers of Algeria, Nigeria, and Niger launched work on the Algerian segment of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) from the Aoulef gas field, with CEOs of Sonatrach, NNPC, and Sonidep present. The $13 billion project aims to transport 20-30 billion cubic meters of Nigerian gas annually to Europe via Algerian infrastructure. Meanwhile, Morocco's AAGP project, costing $25 billion, has yet to secure financing, with an intergovernmental agreement with Nigeria expected in Q4 2026. This competition follows the EU's ban on Russian gas in January 2026.
